Table base types

There are three types of steel table bases to choose from, and each one has a different look and might affect leg room. X-prong styles have four prongs that form an x-shape on the floor. Some might have only two prongs. The weight of the table is distributed between the prongs to keep it even. Round kitchen table bases are circular styles that may be flat or curved at the top. These are often decorative with filigree designs to add some elegance to the table. Bolt-down styles are small bases that are bolted directly to the floor so that the tables can’t move. These make it possible to use a larger table top with a smaller base without the whole thing tipping over. The small base allows for more leg room.

Table base materials

Choosing the type of material for a conference table base depends on both aesthetics and utility. The table legs come in a few different materials that are all sturdy.

  • Powder coated steel comes in many colors to fit the room decor and is resistant to cracks, strains, and rust
  • Steel can hold heavy office table tops without wobbling
  • Cast iron is very heavy and looks elegant in a high-class restaurant
  • Aluminum is just as strong as steel and creates a shiny, modern look for an office

Choosing the correct size steel table base

It's possible to purchase a table with a base, but if it's necessary to buy it separately, then it's important to choose the correct size base for the table top. The width of the base must be large enough to offset the size of the top. Weight is also a factor as the base will add weight to the whole table and may make it difficult to move. It's recommended that only one-third or about 6 inches of the table should overhang the base. This guarantees it's large enough to hold the table top weight without being too heavy to move later. It also provides ample leg room beneath.
