7 Most Expensive Pens

If you decide to treat yourself to a new fountain pen, high-quality brands such as Cross pens or the occasional batch of executive pens probably feels like a real splurge. But it turns out these fancy writing implements are trivial when compared to the world's most expensive pens.

If you're among the reasonable people who assumed pens never get more expensive than roughly $100, it's time we introduced you to a shocking revelation: There are pens out there that cost well over $1 million. (Yes, we're serious, and yes, they are in fact covered in diamonds.)

While most of us mere mortals will never get our hands on one of these writing implements, let us introduce you to some of the world's most outrageously expensive pens.

Let's take a closer look at each of these writing heavyweights.

Tibaldi Fulgor Nocturnus Pen (~$8 million)

If you're looking to bring home one of these bad boys, you're out of luck. There's only one Tibaldi Fulgor Nocturnus pen, which helps explain why it sold for approximately $8 million at a Shanghai auction. The pen is encrusted with 945 black diamonds and 123 rubies, which also helps account for its price. Even so, we still can't imagine how a pen could ever warrant such an extremely high price tag.

Montblanc Johannes Kepler High Artistry Stella Nova Limited Edition 1 (~$1.5 million)

This limited edition pen is designed in honor of 16th-century astronomer and mathematician Johannes Kepler. Nothing celebrates math like diamonds and sapphires, which encrust this pen and purportedly symbolize the sparkling Milky Way. While it might be cheaper to honor an astronomer by, say, gazing at the stars or taking an astronomy course at the nearest university, you wouldn't be able to boast about this pen's nib, which is engraved with the constellation Ophiuchus.

Aurora Diamante Fountain Pen: (~$1.4 million)

With a name suiting its stature, the Italian Aurora Diamante Fountain Pen is one of the most expensive pens you can buy. This platinum writing implement is encrusted with nearly 2,000 De Beers diamonds and tipped with 18-karat gold. Buyers have the option to customize the fancy exterior with their portrait, signature, or coat of arms (because who doesn't have one of those?). If this strikes your fancy, get in line now: The maker purportedly sells just one of these per year.

Heaven Gold Pen by Anita Tan (~$1 million)

The idea of “women supporting women” gets a one-percenter twist via the Heaven Gold Pen, which is designed by a woman for other (extremely rich) women. The pen is supposedly inspired by the planets' shifting alignment, with 161 colored diamonds encircling a 43-carat Tsavorite gemstone. That gemstone is thought to be more than 2 billion years old—so the price represents a cost of less than $1 per year!

Montblanc Limited Edition Mystery Masterpiece (~$730,000)

A joint celebration of the anniversaries of Montblanc and jewelers Van Cleef & Arpels, this pen has a moniker that refers to the jewelers' jewel-setting method, dubbed “the mystery setting.” Its name also references Montblanc's “Mesisterstük” pen, which translates to “Masterpiece” in English. Buyers can customize the pen with their choice of emeralds, rubies, or sapphires—which totally makes the nearly three-quarters-of-a-million-dollar price tag worth it.

Visconti Ripple HRH Limited Edition Fountain Pen (~$52,000)

Looking to split your money between a private yacht and an expensive pen? Then save your dough by purchasing this bargain $52,000 writing implement. There are only 39 of these on the planet right now. Each pen sparkles with 650 white diamonds. The product description bills this as “The perfect gift for the man who has everything.”

Caran d'Ache Horlogerie 1010 Silver/Rhodium Limited Edition Fountain Pen (~$20,000)

While there are plenty of other pens that cost more than $100,000, we wanted to include one that's still crazy pricy, but well below the price of many others on this list. For a cool $20,000, you can take home Caran d'Ache’s 1010 Limited Edition Fountain Pen. The diamond-encrusted writing utensil, which boasts a whopping 850 sparkly rocks, 18-karat gold, and a touch of sapphire in addition to intricate detailing that resembles a Swiss watch. Compared to the other entries on this list, it's a veritable steal!
