There are millions of students with limited-English proficiency in the U.S. As of the 2012 to 2013 school year, nearly 10 percent of all public school students in the U.S. were English language learners, meaning English was not their native language. American schools typically offer five categories of English language programs. The programs offered at any given school or district depend on school demographics, student characteristics, and available resources. No matter what program an English language learner experiences, there will be challenges. Because the English language has so many nuances, non-native speakers often struggle with certain aspects of pronunciation.
